It was in this castle that the flag of the Venetians was raised by Marco Sanudo, the leader of the island’s conquerors in 1207. This was also when the island was named Santorini, after the Church of Santa Irene. The castle ‘Skaros’ was used to protect the island during times when raids were a frequent occurrence. It stood domineeringly for 600 years and was never taken by any enemy force.
